View Full Version : Blue Screen of Death when running 1.8.0.0.

I posted a ticket with support today. The return email says that someone will look at it in the next three business days and to use the forum in the mean time. So here it is, this is what I wrote in the ticket:

I bought a new WD 250GB Passport usb drive. Installed the latest MojoPac to it and activated it. Every time I try to log in to MojoPac, I get the blue screen of death with the message "Page_fault_in_nonpaged_area" 0x00000050 (0xFFFFFF09, 0x00000000, 0x805E04D3, 0x00000000).

Now, not knowing if it was MojoPac, my Windows or what, I pulled out my USB stick that has MojoPac on it. It had 1.6.50 (3048) on it. MojoPac worked fine once I managed to start it manually, as it insisted on downloading 1.8.0.0 when run from start.exe.

Then I let it download the update to 1.8.0.0. Logged into MojoPac on it and got EXACTLY the same blue screen of death. So the problem is proven to be 1.8.0.0.

What do I do now? Is 1.6.5.0 or 1.6.9.0 still available someplace? Otherwise my two licenses for MojoPac are totally worthless.

Any help out there?

Update:

When I got home tonight, I pulled out the USB stick and put it in my home computer. (XP Pro SP2 again.) Bingo. Same results as at work, exact same error message.

I have set my machine to where I had to approve each application launched by another. I found the crash happens when preconfig.exe is being run. (This is when MojoPac says "Loading Configuration" on the boot screen.

So I went and dug out my 80GB iPod which had MojoPac 1.6.9.0 Freedom on it. Worked perfectly.

So, two machines, three Mojo Devices and three versions of MojoPac. 1.8.0.0. crashes during preconfig.exe. 1.6.9.0 and 1.6.5.0 work perfectly on both machines.

Just copied 1.6.9.0. from my iPod over to the Western Digital Passport 250 and tried to run it. It instantly upgraded to 1.8.0.0. So rather than let Start.exe run, I killed it and copied it again. I've made sure that the 1.8.0.0. installer is gone, will disable my internet connection and see if I can get 1.6.9.0 running. If I can and it is still using one of my licenses, I'll disable the autoupdate.

Yes!

My Passport 250 is now running 1.6.9.0 perfectly, is using the key I set it up with and will now no longer look for, download nor install updates! Life is good again.

Now I need to fix my USB stick. The iPod will have to just not run MojoPac as I can't disable the autoupdate suicide mode on the Freedom version.

Wolfman,

Sure thing. I believe this might be what you're looking for.

It's my ongoing collection of Mojopac related files. Just click on this link and then click on whatever files you need. (I've got some killer recipes in Virtual Folders, too. <G>.)

Once you get the one you want, what you might want to do is to disconnect from the Net first and then install an older working version of Mojo. That way, if Auto-Update is turned on (the default, I think) it won't make the connection and step all over this earlier version. It will still install, though.

Then, once that's up and running, go to Settings and turn Auto-Update off. Then reconnect to the Net.
Now, when you install other versions on top of this the settings are preserved and you're back in control.

I didn't try 1.8.0.0. I figured I'd let the Mojo folks work the kinks out first, so when I did jump I went straight from 1.6.9.0 to 1.8.2.0 (which fixed both the SUBSTand TrueCrypt problems).

Right ... so then the TC guys came out with 5.x and hosed it all again. Damn!

Anyway, I'm running Mojo 1.8.2.0 and TC 4.3a and it's working fine on an external USB, in a subdirectory on the Host, in a TC container file and in a TC hidden container file!

The cool thing about 1690 and up is that with Freedom we can now try many different combinations without burning umpteen licenses. That was a Godsend!
The only thing better was fixing the SUBST command so we can not only see the Host files now ... we can actually operate on them with Mojo!!!

Sweet!

Good luck and I hope this helps,
Bill

OK, so after a few hours of struggling, I gave up trying to run the latest release because it continually gave me the BSoD and the ""Page_fault_in_nonpaged_area" error that others have described. I tried everything including using MSCONFIG to remove all but the essential startups, but still couldn't get past the config stage. (This is all after initially discovering that you can't even load it with TrueCrypt 5 and going back to 4.3a)

Following the advice given by others on this thread, I decided to try the 1.6.9.0 release and that worked! However, it automatically tries to load the lastest update when you start it, and because I am testing the freedom edition it doesn't allow you to inactivate the automatic update option. That means switching off the internet connection every time you want to start Mojopac. Furthermore the older edition doesn't benefit from speed improvments that have been made to the latest edition so that it runs faster on a USB stick.

To be useful for me, Mojopac needs to run reliably on any computer without the hassle of switching off net connections etc (these will be other people's machines and the whole idea is to be able to use them with the minimum of interference).

Unless anyone has anything else to suggest, I think I am going to stick with other solutions for my portable computing needs (portable apps etc), although they don't give me access to the same range of programs. It's a pity because I think Mojopac is potentially a winning product -but only if it is stable. It's a pity that the latest version is less functional than an older release.

I will keep a lookout for updates that address this problem, and I hope Mojopac will wave the flags when they have soved it.

Can I ask the MojoPac support people if this is an issue that you are actively addressing?

Benoone,

Sorry about that. It's usually always up and running, though occasionally the system locks up for other reasons and I need to reboot it. Also, my whole system's down for about a half an hour around sunset here on the East Coast (USA) every day. It may well be that you hit in this time slot. If it happens again, give it about a half hour or so and try it again. It should be back up by then.

In version 1.8.0.0., I too had the same problem. Now I switched to 1.6.9.0 (earlier version) as advised by bogburn48, and it works fine. But the problem is AUTO UPDATE could not be switched off in settings. Please post if anybody knows(particularly bogburn48 - who has suggested) how to switch off AUTO UPDATE. In freedom version without upgrading to 1.8.0.0. the programme doesn't start. I quote limey in this regard.

Sathyamganesh,

I'm not sure if this will help or not, but it might. There is no way to turn off Auto Update in the Freedom versions. For that, you need to shell out the money for the Deluxe version.

It's been a while since I ran it, but I was thinking that 1.6.9.0 did come up for me even without an internet connection. I'll run a test later and get back to you on that. I do know for sure that that was the way I prevented earlier versions from updating when I inadvertantly had Auto Update turned on. They would come up and I'd turn Auto Update off and then enable Net access. These were purchased versions, though, which later became the Deluxe version.

With the advent of Freedom (1.6.9.0?), I believe they enabled host subdirectory installation, SUBST, and multiple installations. I do know that when they went to 1.8.0.0 SUBST suddenly quit working and possibly TrueCrypt 4.3a did, too. This is what lead to 1.8.2.0, the "patched" version that fixed the SUBST problem. Fortunately for us, it also fixed the TC 4.3a problem as well. TC then came out with TC 5.x, which does not currently work with 1.8.2.0.

Now, what might work for you is 1.8.2.0, even though 1.8.0.0 doesn't. The problem, though, is that the unavoidable Auto Update in 1.6.9.0 only takes you to 1.8.0.0.
However, you can beat that by manually downloading 1.8.2.0 and installing it yourself instead.

What's cool about this scenario is that we've bypassed the problems and, even though we can't turn off Auto Update, it doesn't matter ... it's already been updated and, hence, doesn't see a need to be "updated" back down to 1.8.0.0. The trick is having to "roll your own", as it were. <heh, heh>.

The "patched" version (1.8.2.0) is out on their website, though as I recall it's fairly well hidden. If you can't find it, I've got a copy locally on my machine at: http://76.104.94.84/Mojo/MojoPacInstaller_1820-SUBST-patch.exe

I don't know that this will fix your problem, but it might. What I do know is that Auto Update will only take you to 1.8.0.0 and we know that don't git it. Hopefully, this will.

Good luck on it,
Bill

Dear bogburn48,

Thanks for spending your precious time to give such a detailed advice to my post. But alas, it doesn't work. First I tried to install ver. 1.8.2.0 as new installation. Blue screen came. Then I deleted the whole thing and installed
ver 1.6.9.0 then upgraded to 1.8.2.0 (got it from your collections-Thanks)
straight over the old version. Again the Blue screen appeared.

So the lesson is, never upgrade to more than 1.6.9.0 and be happy. You have to switch off your modem everytime to avoid auto update, in that freedom version 1.6.9.0.

I wonder why the MAJOPAC people, doesn't allow us (freedom version customers) to disable auto upgrade in ver.1.6.9.0. !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Sathyam,

You're quite welcome. I'm just sorry it didn't work. That's a crying shame, too, because 1.8.2.0 is really nice! Particularly so with its ability to work with SUBSTituted host drives and TrueCrypt.

Just out of curiosity, are you running an English language version of Windows? Others here have had problems with non-standard (non-English) ones, like German, Italian, Portugese, Chinese, etc. and they, too, have gotten blue screens, although I'm not sure if that was due to Mojo or something they were trying to run in Mojo. I know they had problems and I think that was true in both cases.

Freedom's nice in that we can have multiple copies on usb's and the host, but it IS agonizingly frustrating to have to kill the modem just to come up every time.
I'm assuming that's true ... ie: that you only need a dead modem for it to come up, but that once it's up you can cut it back on and work online normally.

Yeah, that and the forced advertisement in outgoing e-mail were both designed to frustrate us enough to buy a Deluxe version, I suspect. I don't blame them. I don't particularly like it, but I really don't blame them. On the other hand, they did do us a favor by allowing multiple copies of Freedom to be installed, which makes testing it a whole LOT easier!

One word of caution, however ... BEWARE of canceling out of an upgrade!!! I did that once, way on back, and it royally messed things up. Not only did it not come up, it wouldn't even let me reinstall over what I had. I finally had to completely reformat the drive and start from scratch. <ARRRRRGH!>.

I don't know what would happen in the case where you let the upgrade finish (even knowing that it wouldn't work). I suspect that you COULD cut the modem off later and then reinstall 1.6.9.0 and have it work.

Matter of fact, I just bailed out of a Freedom trying to reactivate last night and strangely, while it worked fine, it somehow cooked my one good copy of Mojo Deluxe.
Man, HOT don't even come close! <G>. I'm waiting for them to advise me on how to play the hand.

Again, I'm sorry things didn't work out for you. Hopefully, Mojo will get the bugs worked out and you can see what 1.8.x.x is like. It really IS a lot better.

Take care,
Bill Ogburn

That's the primary reason I bought the two pak
I keep a spare license... unused
I can pick it up any time (well almost depending on the ethernet) things go bad with the other.
